Core Aeration
In simplest terms, Core Aeration is the process of making finger sized holes in your lawn and
depositing the removed material on the surface to break down. This allows fertilizer, water and
oxygen to get to the roots where healthy grass originates. Small plugs of soil and thatch are
removed allowing more air, water and nutrients to reach the root zone, leading to better plant
growth. The microorganisms in the plugs that remain on the surface will dissolve back into the
thatch layer to help it breakdown, naturally.
Excess thatch build-up and compacted soils are two major influences on the health and growth of
your lawn. Core aeration can help reduce thatch and relieve compaction to provide a greener and
healthier lawn.
Thatch is the intermingled layer of roots, stems and other natural material that builds up at the soil
surface. Some thatch (1/2 inch or less) is desirable as it will act as a cushion and help protect the
lawn from temperature extremes. When thatch exceeds 1/2 inch, it will reduce lawn vigor and
increase insect and disease problems.
Core aeration is one of the most beneficial services that you can provide for your lawn. It effectively
“opens the pores” of compacted soils and reduces unhealthy thatch buildup so the nutrients water
and air can reach the root structure. It’s the health of what's hidden below the surface that
determines the appearance of the lush green lawn we all enjoy. Water and nutrients are not
intended for the green upper portion of your grass plants. Core aeration allows your irrigation and
fertilizer investment to truly work for you.
